Sofa Collection Birmingham
Birmingham Removals collects old sofas, couches, corner suites, armchairs and sofa beds from any floor across Birmingham and 20 miles around, from £40. We carry it out ourselves, usually the same day, and either donate it to a local reuse charity or strip and recycle it at a licensed facility.
A sofa is the single hardest thing in a house to get rid of. It will not fit in a wheelie bin, most Birmingham recycling centres restrict van and trailer access with a permit and booking scheme, and charities refuse anything without an intact fire label. That leaves a council bulky waste slot — which you have to book, wait for, and drag the sofa to the kerb for — or a booked private collection.
We collect from wherever the sofa is. Upstairs flats with no lift, tight Victorian staircases in Kings Heath or Moseley, converted mansion flats on Hagley Road, student houses in Selly Oak — our two-person crews bring straps and tools, remove feet and back panels where a suite will not turn on a landing, and put floor protection down on the way out. There is no surcharge for stairs or a long carry.
Pricing follows the same volume bands as the rest of our rubbish removal work. A single two- or three-seater sofa starts at £40, and adding a second sofa, an armchair or a mattress to the same visit costs far less than booking two separate collections — a quarter van is £90 and a half van £140, which covers a full three-piece suite comfortably.
What happens next depends on the sofa. If the frame is sound, the upholstery is clean and the fire label is still attached, it goes to a local reuse charity where it will be resold rather than destroyed. If it fails on any of those, it is taken to a licensed processor where the timber frame is chipped, the steel springs and staples go to scrap, and the foam and textile layers are recovered. Sofas are not landfilled whole.
Sofa Collection Cost in Birmingham
We price on the space the item takes in the van rather than by the hour, so a single sofa stays cheap and a suite is still one fixed price. These are the bands we quote across Birmingham with no mileage surcharge inside the 20-mile radius.
| What you're getting rid of | Load size | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| One two- or three-seater sofa | Minimum load | From £40 |
| Sofa plus an armchair or mattress | Quarter van | £90 |
| Full three-piece suite | Half van | £140 |
| Suite plus a room of furniture | Three-quarter van | £190 |
| Whole lounge or full house clearance | Full Luton van | £250 |
- Prices include the carry-down, loading, transport, disposal and your waste transfer note.
- Combining a sofa with other items in one visit is always cheaper than two separate collections.
- The quote is fixed from your photos before we set off — it does not change on the doorstep.
Fire Label Rules — Why They Decide Where Your Sofa Goes
Every sofa sold in the UK since the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 carries a permanent fire-safety label, usually stitched under a cushion or on the underside of the frame. Charities and second-hand dealers are legally unable to resell upholstered furniture without that label attached and legible, which is the most common reason a perfectly usable sofa gets refused for donation.
Before you write your sofa off, lift the seat cushions and check. If the label is there and the upholstery is clean and undamaged, tell us when you book and we will route it to a reuse charity instead of a processor. If the label is missing, torn or unreadable, the sofa cannot be resold by anyone in the UK and recycling is the only legitimate route — which we handle at a licensed facility rather than sending it to landfill.
Council Bulky Waste vs Private Sofa Collection
Birmingham City Council runs a chargeable bulky waste collection for household items including sofas. It is a reasonable option if you are not in a hurry: you book online, wait for the next available slot, and put the sofa out at the boundary of your property on the morning of collection.
The trade-offs are speed and labour. A council slot is scheduled days or weeks ahead and is not guaranteed to a time, the item has to be at the kerb — which is the hard part if it is on a first floor — and items left out early can attract a fly-tipping enforcement notice. A private collection costs more, but you choose the day, we carry the sofa down and out ourselves, and you get a waste transfer note documenting where it went.
| Birmingham City Council bulky waste | Our sofa collection | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Booked slot, often days or weeks ahead | Same-day or next-day, seven days a week |
| Who carries it out | You, to the property boundary | Our two-person crew, from any floor |
| Cost | Fixed council charge per collection | From £40, priced by van space used |
| Paperwork | Council booking confirmation | Waste transfer note emailed after the job |
| Best for | Planned, budget-led disposal | Upstairs sofas, urgent jobs, multiple items |

Yes. Call before midday and we can normally collect that afternoon, anywhere in Birmingham and within 20 miles, seven days a week including bank holidays, at no premium for the speed.
Yes, and there is no stairs surcharge. Our crews strap and dismantle where a suite will not turn on a landing, and floor protection goes down on the way out.
Yes, Birmingham City Council runs a chargeable bulky waste collection that accepts sofas, but you book a slot in advance and must put the sofa out at your property boundary yourself. A private collection is faster and includes the carry-down.
UK law prevents charities and dealers reselling upholstered furniture without an intact, legible fire-safety label. With the label attached we can route a clean sofa to a reuse charity; without it, licensed recycling is the only legitimate route.
Sound, clean sofas with a fire label go to a local reuse charity. Everything else goes to a licensed processor where the frame is chipped, springs go to scrap steel and the foam and textiles are recovered. We do not landfill sofas whole.
